CNAIR Director search (full professor)
THE CENTER FOR NATIVE AMERICAN AND INDIGENOUS RESEARCH
To date, CNAIR and its affiliates have achieved excellence in three areas of research: Environment Related Sciences and Social Welfare, Global Indigeneity, and the Indigenous Midwest & Urban Indigenous Studies. In addition, affiliated faculty at Northwestern excel in education, history, global health, and museum studies. CNAIR is well poised for leadership to build on these strengths and expand our demonstrated research and academic programming excellence. We have established a Native American and Indigenous studies minor that is growing quickly. CNAIR currently provides annual fellowships for students and faculty, hosts a brown bag series as well as an annual symposium. In addition, CNAIR hosts both an artist-in-residence program as well as an elder-in-residence program. The new Director will continue to provide leadership across these activities and expand the center in new directions.
THE POSITION: FULL PROFESSOR AND DIRECTOR OF CNAIR
Minimum Qualifications
- Candidates must hold a PhD or its equivalent in their field by the time of appointment and will be expected to teach (a varied range of undergraduate and graduate courses).
- Strong expertise in aspects of the politics, culture and/or history of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Indigenous peoples (globally) and federal policies and political relations. Understanding of urban Indian populations is desirable.
- Degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10+ years of relevant professional experience; Professor in open field
- Substantial research, scholarship, and project experience
- Successful track record of leadership in higher education
- Current grant support and academic service
Desired Qualifications
- Successful and sustained record of fundraising
- Demonstrable track record in strategic and operational management and planning
- Experience of financial planning and resource allocation
- Experience in cultivating relationships with Tribal Nations and Native and Indigenous community organizations
- Experience in research initiatives and collaboration
- Experience in leading academic departments or research institutes and centers
Responsibilities
- Candidates will be expected to teach (a varied range of undergraduate and graduate courses). Northwestern's base teaching load is four courses spread between three academic quarters.
- Director will support the running of CNAIR including supporting the undergraduate (NAIS minor) and graduate programs (course scheduling, course staffing, facilitating promotion and tenure review), interacting with students (advising, recruiting, career development, and of course teaching), curriculum development, and developing corporate relationships
- Advise and mentor junior faculty
- Mentor and advise graduate students in their home department
- Fulfill faculty responsibilities in their home department
- Implementing grant goals and research capacity is critical while continuing to develop new grant proposals for interdisciplinary projects across the University and in partnership with Native and Indigenous communities
- Developing, reassessing, and implementing a strategic plan
- Securing external funding in support of the center’s mission, such as large collaborative awards that emphasize interdisciplinary research
- Stimulating new research activities, collaborations, and directions, in part by organizing meetings, workshops, as well as educational and outreach activities
- Supervising the technical and administrative staff and overseeing their professional growth. Currently CNAIR has three staff members the director collaborates with on a regular basis.
- Overseeing the finances and accounts, working closely with CNAIR staff on these activities
- Creating and submitting annual reports for external partners and sponsors
- Maintaining CNAIR’s leadership position in its mission area as benchmarked against peer research institutes and centers
- This appointment also includes an initial three-year rotating term as Director of the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research.
